Have any of you had to explain to non-techies or senior management the
problem with relying on back-ups to retrieve needed information? Have
you had success in explaining to them that there are windows of
vulnerabilities in the recycling of tapes?

I'd like to know if any of you were able to devise a simple yet
effective graphical means of explaining this problem. The issue at hand
here is that though there is a push to make documents electronic, there
is a mistaken belief that the moment it becomes electronic it is safe
from harm and is backed-up automatically and retrievable through a
restoration process.

I know tapes are not meant to do that. I also know that tapes are
recycled and therefore some data is lost through the overwriting of the
tapes. And that this is not proper records management.

What I am after is a slide or picture that points out these problems and
especially the idea that some data is lost over time using back-ups.

This will go towards building a case for implementing a proper ECM/EDMS
solution rather than relying on ordinary LAN drives for storage and
retrieval of documents.
