I'm in the process of trying to do this in conjunction with implementing
SAP. I've actually found inspiration from Tina Torres' work at Microsoft
developing "process-based" retentions. So the Big Buckets I'm working to,
are the processes and sub processes of our ERP/SAP installation. To the
extent I can tie record input and outputs to specific business processes
there's a potential to automate much of the lifcycle management of those
records - or at least that's the Holy Grail I am seeking. The nice thing
about the "big buckets" in SAP is they can accommodate those annoying
"contingent" retentions like 5 years after life of equipment, if the piece
of equipment is a business object in SAP.
But, I'm just starting down this path and may be overly optimistic, check
back with me in 5 years and I'll let you know how it turned out.

All,
I attended the MER Conference last week and heard Susan Cisco talk about
Big Bucket retention schedules. I am currently looking at my schedule
to see if I can consolidate some classifications but was wondering if
any of you folks have done this in your organization. If so, how did
your organizations respond and were there any downsides? Thanks for
your help.
