Can't we (RM and IT) all just get along? Gentlemen, gentlemen... let's
focus on the possible solutions to this time-tested issue.

I think Simon has posted his clarification of what appears to have been a
premature-posting (in his words).

The issue or question in question is Should or Should Not RM report under
IT? Many have provided individual experiences and opinions. I will spare
all the long history of my background (see the most recent Candidate Forum
if you really care ;-). I now work in a RM function of IT where I partner
with our Corporate RM unit who reports to Compliance under our Finance
leg. We both report to different C-level execs, but have common
goals/priorities in mind:

1) Don't delete what we need (keep - records, non-records, information)
2) Find what we need when needed (retreive - eDiscovery, business use)
3) Perform records retention deletion when business and legal needs are
met (destroy - automated when possible or manual if need be)

Both our RM and IT areas seek to deliver solutions aligning with these
principles and partner together to achieve the same. Some can argue that
having us in one area would make us stronger, or that having us in two
areas with aligned objectives makes us stronger and reinforces a common
message in the organization. Either way, we both pick up a "weapon" and
stand our post... for the betterment of our organization. The strength of
our common objectives and not our organizational structure is what allows
us to move forward in a time when budget dollars tighten.

Now Peter has clarified his position was directed at Simon's initial
premature posting, Simon has clarified himself, and Jesse has demonstrated
his passion and defended his honor through his prose... but I think we are
all interested in "constructive" dialog and not "destructive" attacks. I
think we can all agree that the issue raised here is one with a lot of
interest, passion, and history behind it.

Let's continue to share our ideas and experiences peacefully -- let's use
this tool for good and not evil, shall we? This is just business, it's
not personal. Who wants to start the chorus of "cum ba ya"?

Happy Independence Day everyone!
