How timely! My firm is opening up a new floor and all the attorneys are assuming they will be able to fill the new cabinets on their floor without leaving any space for future growth. The new floor will only be half full to begin with. I've been given the task of figuring out the linear ft. of file space and divvying it up equally among the attorney offices on the floor. From 25 years (ouch) of experience in law firms, no matter how you allocate the file space to attorneys, it is never enough and no one is happy. I do know from too many years; large litigations, bankruptcies and mergers take up lots of filing space. Encourage scanning!

Off my soapbox and back to work,

Subject: Ratio of file cabinets to lawyers

Good afternoon all,

I am sending this query to a couple listservs so excuse the cross-post.

Does anyone have a guideline or policy about the number of file cabinets
each lawyer is allocated? If you do, does it vary by practice?

I'm happy to collate responses and share with the list if there is
enough interest.

Cheers,
