Dear Colleagues:

As far as I can tell, when the French are talking about managing the entire
life cycle, they are consistently using the phrase "records management."
When they are talking about managing creation and distribution, they use the
phrase "gestion de documents." When they are talking about the point when
business objects become cultural objects, they use the phrase "archives."

When ISO 15489 was translated into French, they brought "records management"
untranslated into the French language, much to the chagrin of the Quebecoise
who had been a part of the long tradition of Canadian records management who
had a lot of other terms for it (gestion des fichiers, gestion des dossiers,
etc.).

Just say "records management" with a French accent and you have the
translation.

For good web sites to see this in action go to www.adbs.fr and
www.archivistes.org. In the latter, put in "records management" and see what
you come up with.

Best wishes,
Carol
