I purchased my first CD in 1983, an import "Best of Queen." There was
much in the classic section and I still have most of those.
There were not many CDs available until 1986. Blondie "Parallel Lines"
was around in 1983. The CD player was $600 and nothing like anything I
have seen since. If I had only kept it. The thing was a relic of an
early age.
When I saw CD's and went to an audiophile demonstration the person went
on about how indestructible they were. I still have my vinyl but my CD's
scratched and were useless.
I was in Hong Kong in 1985 and saw a small portable CD player. It was
battery operated and you could carry it around with headphones. I
purchased it and I later found out it was Sony's first portable CD
player. Still there were not many CD's available but I managed to find a
Best of the Rolling Stones to play on it while on vacation.
Now we download and all the record stores are gone. I still like my
vinyl.

I knew it was 1982, but had no idea ABBA was the first CD commercially
pressed. When I bought my first CD, it was a batch of about 6 of them.
Among the group was The Beatles- Rubber Soul and the White Album,
Santana-Abraxas, The Who- Who's Next?, and of course, Pink Floyd- The
Dark
Side of the Moon =)
