A book I found useful on taxonomies is "The Organization of
Information," by Arlene Taylor, part of the Library and Information text
series. Taxonomy is addressed in the information and Library Science
field. I find all the book by the Library and Information Text Series
most helpful. You can find them at large book stores or check your
library.

Hi Michelle,
The book I have recommended, and given to clients, is Patrick Lambe's
excellent introduction, "Organizing Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and
Organizational Effectiveness" (ISBN 1843342274, $69.95). I purchased
another
book, "Typologies and Taxonomies: An Introduction to Classification
Techniques (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)" by
Kenneth
D. Bailey, but I found it quite academic and probably of little value to
most non-IA types.
You could also check a number of websites and blogs, including

Based on my limited experience with taxonomy development, a lot of work
is
involved. So at the risk of being self-serving, you may wish to hire a
consultant that can assist you with this (Full disclosure: while I don't
do
as much taxonomy work - yet - Access Sciences does do quite a bit of
this).
There are a number of them out there; Seth Earley at Earley & Associates
focuses on this (http://www.earley.com) and is also active in the Yahoo!
Group Taxonomy Community of Practice
(http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/TaxoCoP/). That list gets about
3-5
posts a day.
Finally, CMSWatch is developing an instructor-led and online certificate
program for AIIM on something called Information Organization and Access
(IOA) which includes taxonomy development. The course is scheduled to go
live in September; you can find more details, including cost and
schedule,
