Hey John - 
 
Are there project numbers as well or is it just a running set of drawings by disipline? From what you describe there seems to be an essential piece of the puzzle that is missing.
 
We would number:
2147-G12345
 
First 4 digits would be a project number. Would group your drawings a build the associated data set. Just a thought - I may be way out in left field.
