Actually there are a total of 14 fields available for indexing in the
system, including project numbers, all of which can be used to locate
the desired drawing. However, not all are used with each drawing,
depends on type of drawing, type of project and a few other variables.
One of the issues is that not all drawings have a specific project
number/identifier in addition to the alphanumeric designation, which, at
least for previous drawing sets, makes it difficult to index and
retrieve.

Are there project numbers as well or is it just a running set of
drawings by disipline? From what you describe there seems to be an
essential piece of the puzzle that is missing.
 
We would number:
2147-G12345
 
First 4 digits would be a project number. Would group your drawings a
build the associated data set. Just a thought - I may be way out in left
field.
