Dear Colleagues:

The goal of the competency program is to create a validated set of skills
and knowledge that anyone in records and information management would have
to know much the way a standard would be set. The competencies are created
at four different levels from entry level to the executive in charge of
strategy. ARMA, in partnership with the ICRM, is in the process of
validating the competencies against the outline of the CRM examination. The
purpose of this activity is to ensure the competencies contain all the
skills and knowledge required by a records manager. As the outline for the
CRM was rewritten to include management of electronic records, this will be
particularly valuable.

The purpose of the competencies project is not to distinguish one
examination from another. The purpose of the competencies is to create a
skills and knowledge base for ARMA's educational offerings so our members
can be confident they have or can obtain all the skills and knowledge they
require from ARMA and its educational partners. The competencies may
eventually help members determined what knowledge they will need to take the
CRM. However, because the CRM requires experience in addition to an
examination, only time can provide the other requirement.

The self-assessment that is now being developed will give ARMA members the
opportunity to determine where their own knowledge and skills gaps so they
can go out and get the education (or experience) required. The competencies
reflect the entire records management body of knowledge.

Best wishes,
Carol
