There really are no "sample" taxonomies in records management. We build each
one from scratch to reflect the organization rather than an ideal like the
Dewey Decimal System. This is a very different approach from the way library
science and "content managers" do its work. Records management taxonomies
are not developed solely to organize information for retrieval. A records
series is defined as a class in a taxonomy primarily by its retention. For
the past 100 years we have built our taxonomies from reality, from how
organizations actually organize their information and using their
terminology, rather than imposing that from the outside. We also organize
the information by key activities rather than knowledge or conceptual
activities.

Taxonomies purchased from a vendor or developed by persons who are not
records management consultants normally do not work well with all the
purposes of records management, such as retention and destruction, security
and privacy, and vital records. Make certain the person building your
taxonomy has broad-based experience in the area for which you want to
develop it.

Best wishes,
Carol
