Our typical schema for drawing No.s:
XX###-X-### /X\

XX: General project code (specific project # is separate field)
###: Physical Area, established categories
-X-: Discipline, A-Z, established categories
###: Sequence, controlled list
/X\: Revision, contained in triangle.

We file first by discipline, then area, then sequence, then revision.
Works very well for electronic searching and physical retrieval.  The
only thing to trip over is knowing whether the filename or data field
actually uses the hyphens.  As a rule we don't type them.
