Remember that I work in the private sector and have always done so. I have also always worked for companies that are heavily litigated.
 
Certificates of destruction and their supporting documentation were retained permanently. 
 
Along with the retention schedules that were in effect at the time, I've had to produce destruction notices in support of a litigation request. 
 
Important stuff.
