Melissa, I'd use the following examples for the analogy to provide a better sense of the definitions (these examples are from my layperson's perspective, btw):

Function: Product Development (i.e. something that GM does as part of its business)
Record Series: Designs for Chevrolet Corvette, 2007 (i.e. all of the records involved in this activity)
Record Type: Artist's concept of car exterior (i.e. specific document type)
