Conferences are always the sort of thing that can end up on the cutting
room floor, budget or no budget when times get tough. I have made an
effort to ensure that management knows that my CRM requires continuing
education and the ARMA Conference is the best way for me to maintain my
certification. In addition, I have typically made an effort to ensure
that some sort of professional networking is in my job description.

Neither of those things will ensure Conference attendance, but you
should also make an effort to show the value of Conference. I make an
effort (and it is in my performance goals) to walk away from Conference
with three actionable learnings that I report back to management. I am
then assessed on whether or not I was able to act on those learnings.

These things will help, but at the end of the day, if your company is
not spending money on any conferences, you shouldn't expect to be an
exception. However, if management is faced with making decisions about
who goes and who doesn't, showing the value (and the professional
certification necessity) of Conference attendance will help.

And remember, it is also a metter of expressing needs versus wants. If
you can demonstrate the NEED to attend Conference, that carries a lot
more weight than simply WANTING to attend.

Best of luck.
