Schools of (traditional) library and information science exist as do "i" schools that focus more on information science. I teach a core course on the information environment, which hardly ever mentions "library." (We also have a minor in information science and technology.)

Information science, however, is a discipline unto itself, focusing on theory, research, information storage and retrieval, information architecture, bibliometrics, etc.

If what you're interested in is IT, that's another area in most schools accredited by the American Library Association. Once past the core courses, look for database managment, Web courses, human computer interface, the information society, digital libraries, business intelligence, knowledge managmement, and on and on.

Want to be a librarian? Come on down, we have that, too.

Mike
