Anyone that is likely to be a target of the CIA, FBI, NSA
(oh...actually, given our current political climate aren't we
all<grin>)may find these sort of products to be insufficient
"protection".

For all practical purposes though these products will do a satisfactory
job of making deleted files essentially un-recoverable.

I think the next time one of my staff wants to REALLY delete a file I'll
walk up to their desk with my old degaussing coil and
demonstrate how to REALLY delete a file (oooops...all your files are
gone...my bad).

Gerry

Something to consider about many of these products is, while they take
comercially reasonable steps to follow accepted standards for secure
wiping, they do not shred the data. They only cover it up. Anyone with
the right tools - insert the 3 letter agency of your choice - and time
can still recover it.

Proper degausing is a more secur option, and either melting or buring -
acid or a furnace - are ideal where confidentiality is paramount.

Subject: "Shredding" software

Has anyone used or evaluated the Lavasoft File Shredder software that
was included in Peter's last RAIN compilation?

When I discuss the disposition of electronic records, people are
surprised and often concerned that by simply deleting an electronic file
it is not truly destroyed, but still discoverable. This type of software
would be very useful for that purpose, but I can also see it as being
very dangerous for people to be able to obliterate files, especially in
the world of drag and drop. I am interested in anyone's opinion of this
issue or use of this or similar software.

Thanks

Janice
