I am a Records Manager in a law firm and YES getting your paralegal credential/certificate would be very advantageous. It helps to have classes in all the major fields of law so you better understand when the attorneys come to you with specifics and attorneys do give you specifics rather than the basics. While I was trained as a junior high history/science teacher (yes it is applicable to young attorneys) I attained my paralegal certificate in the early 1980s and used it until the mid 1990s when I took on the newly created position of records supervisor in one office to a multi-office law firm, after a total of 18 years as both a paralegal and records supervisor with that firm I moved on to a records manager position and am so glad I have the paralegal training, it has helped my understanding of the law firm needs immensely. The CRM has also helped but isn't always as applicable in the law firm environment.

Subject: Benefits of a J.D., paralegal, or Master of Legal Studies

In addition to my pursuits of attaining the CRM and finishing up my
Master of Information Management (concentration information science) and
Chief Information Officer Certification, does anyone see any benefit in
pursuing the paralegal studies or Master of Legal Studies instead of a
J.D.? My pursuit is not to become a lawyer but to gain skills in the
legal field in preparation for working as a records manager
administrator in a law firm or the legal arm of a government agency. Or
should I just take a few legal courses? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
