I agree 100% with William. In a law firm setting, even though having a
JD may help you in your job, it won't matter to the administration and
partners that hire you. For job market purposes, I believe the only
advantage you gain with a JD is if you are in a recruitment situation
where you are being compared to other applicants and all other factors
are perfectly equal, i.e., the firm is comparing apples to apples. If
other candidates have no other advantage over you, then maybe having a
JD will be a plus in terms of you actually getting the job. But I don't
believe having a JD will get you a higher salary -- a CRM will be better
in this regard -- and it won't help you secure a position if there are
better-qualified non-JDs also applying for the same position. Just my
two cents.

While I think it is fair to say that more education wouldn't hurt, very
few records managers/directors in law firms, including the biggest in
New York City, have a J.D., and I'll go further and say it's not
needed. What every law firm is looking for today are people with records
experience AND a technical background. If I were entering the field
today, in addition to my records studies and field experience sufficient
to qualify to test for the CRM, I'd get experience and a technical
degree covering project management, systems analysis, database
management, search techniques, and reports design.
