Karen,

Happy Holidays to you!

Our RIM program is organized around other administrative functions. My
direct reporting relationship is the campus administrative Vice
Chancellor - Resource Management and Planning. Our VC reports to the
Chancellor. My reporting relationship is a recent change.

Our campus archivists are located in Mandeville Special Collections,
housed in the main Geissel Library complex and at Scripps Institution of
Oceanography. Both report to a central librarian who reports in turn to
the head librarian.

We do not centrally manage records on our campus. Our department
responsibilities also include the campus administrative policy manual,
delegations of authority and public records access and privacy, and
administrative work for the Chancellor.

I believe it is a great fit, though I take no credit for its evolution,
since I often believe that how our responsibilities did evolve had more
to do with not placing a campus-wide activity under both business and
finance or under academic affairs leadership.

Our campus counsel, as well as our audit departments, does not produce
any work for a "line-function" responsibility such as the RIM program.
They will audit and provide legal advice, but refrain from having work
that would in turn be difficult to assess independently.

Subject: [RM] Question for Univ RMs

Good morning from a lurker with a question.

I am trying to figure out the variety of places Universities put their
Records Management programs within the organization. Where do you
report?

Our RM originally reported to the Univ. Librarian. Following her
departure
the institution looked at moving the position under the Financial V.P.,
but
left it in the library and placed it under my department. Then, as luck
would have it, the funding was pulled for the position and the duties
ended
up with me.

We are now re-examining the future of the program and I am trying to
discover where others place their RM programs in the institution.

Thanks for any replies.

Happy Holidays,
Karen
