Steven, I would chose 3 unless there is a legal requirement that
personally identifying information be expunged (I don't know if such
requirements apply to law firms). If there are such requirements, and
such information is part of the index, then I would chose 2, with the
destruction documentation working at the series or accession level (ie.
"we destroyed all of the 2004 records from record series Y"). In
reality, you probably could have documentation of both if you have any
kind of disposition approval process that operates on the
accession/series level rather than the individual file level (which is
the level at which all of our destruction authorizations occur). I would
not chose 1 in any circumstances.
