I think it has more to do with the fundamental human nature to want to
read and pronounce the written word and with the use of mnemonic devices
to remember what things mean.
Organizations go to great lengths to make their acronyms spell something
memorable, even if it convolutes the actual name -- can't think of any
off the top of my head, but you've seen them. (The Harry Potter books
have a whole bit about "SPEW" which makes fun of the whole concept, but
I digress.)
R-I-M falls off the tongue more easily ... "rim." How would you
pronounce I-R-M? ... "erm?" Would the practitioners be 'ermits?
