Both products offer modules that provide similar resources for performing
research on legal citations, both offer ongoing subscription services, and
neither do it all for you.

Each is updated on a cycle, and they catch most of the requirements, but
depending on how they categorize the citations, you may or may not find
everything that's applicable to your industry segment or place(s) of
business.

They are starting points for anyone unable or unwilling to do their own
research, and as others have said before "They're better than having
nothing" =) The research to developing a retention schedule is daunting
to many, and depending on how heavily regulated your organization is and how
broad the spectrum of sources the citations may come from, it can take an
extensive amount of time to do the initial gathering of citations.

However, once that's done... maintaining an updating them isn't as
difficult. You need to establish a schedule for periodic assessment of the
sources you identify and regularly check them for changes, and when changes
occur, evaluate them for relevance to your organization. The same is true
for either of the "canned services" you mentioned, because while they may
provide citations, they don't tell you if they're applicable to your
specific industry segment, or organization... only your legal counsel can
make that determination.

Another thing worth mentioning is if you use a canned service's guidance,
they don't offer any warranty, expressed or implied, that their research is
complete, current, or applicable to you. And if you get hauled into court
for not doing something, or doing something incorrectly, the Judge isn't
going to care whose information you relied on... your organization will
still be held responsible for choosing to rely on it's accuracy.
