Boeing has done a couple of LEAN workshops on RIM issues.  We focused
on:

1) Improving the tools, processes, and policies for disposition of
records;

2) The cycle time (and associated processes) for the way in which we
administer requested changes to our retention schedule.

We've not been directly involved in providing high-level LEAN
calculations to other organizations, but are occasionally asked to
provide data to other groups who want to add RIM information (e.g., cost
of off-site storage) as a consideration on their LEAN projects.  When
asked, we also try to get them to consider how adding retention rules to
their automated applications can help drive reduced long-term electronic
storage costs.

(FYI, I'm retiring from Boeing on Feb. 1, and going to work for a law
firm.  I've added my personal email address, as well as my Boeing one,

Hi all,
I am trying to align the benefits of good records management to LEAN
initiatives.  It makes sense to me that many of the areas in which
Records Management adds value also provide some of the benefits of
"lean" processes.  Records Management is not only about retention, it is
also about improving retrieval and creating additional value in linking
information to create new meaning.

RIM processes ensure that information is available for everyone that
needs it, when they need it, in the condition they need it - that is our
stock in trade.  We understand the value of creating, documenting and
standardizing processes.  We believe that good recordkeeping allows
organizations to have visibility into their operations and projects and
if there is a taxonomy in place, to see how all the projects link
together.  

I would appreciate if anyone who has worked to align RM initiatives to
Lean would send me ideas to add to this list, give me examples of how
your RM program contributed to the success of a lean project, or
anything else that might help me show how RIM adds value.

There was a great article in the 2005 IMJ "Streamlining Enterprise
Records Management with Lean Six Sigma" that makes a good case for
applying Lean principles to RM programs.  I am looking for how RM
programs contribute to Lean iniatives within an organization.
