All NSW Government organisations have to use ISO 15489 to the extent to
which it is incorporated in the mandatory standards of the NSW State Records
Office. Most other Austrlian state governments have similar setups, as do
the Feds in Canberra.

Of course, on a day to day basis at the coalface most employees are very
unlikely to have heard of 15489, but it drips down into work practices.

So I work from NSW State Records standards rather than 15489, and I quote
15489 to persuade management that State Records is not doing anything other
than best practice. I don't otherwise use 15489 at all.

When I was in the private sector I used 15489 to define best practice but
purely from a risk avoidance point of view, ie will it help us in court if
we can say we use it?

Top management aren't interested in this sort of detail, especially given
15489's bias towards government, and given that it's detail in many areas is
old fashioned. Top management ask me to tell them we are on track, and I
quote NSW State Records Standards, ISO 15489, moReq and anything else I need
to establish that I know what I'm talking about. But I don't go into detail.
