Nelly,

Not enough research and writing is done on Records Management. Good for
you!

The issue I most hear about most among modern records managers is the lack
of a common practice to capture born digital materials at the start of the
records life cycle.

This born digital material includes emails, text records such a .doc
files, spreadsheets, databases, etc. Current methods are either not user
friendly or cost effective. Content Management systems have major flaws
which start with requiring platform standardization between records
creators/users, as well as training/education/reliable records creators to
provide front end metadata for searching.

You have many possibilities with this issue. There are more than a
handful of projects devoted to this issue. Also, software companies saying
they will produce the next ?sliver bullet.? But this is a list of
questions swimming around in my head: Where are we (RM and IT) going with
this issue? When can we see viable solutions? What should they look like?
Why are current solutions for this issue making records mangers life more
difficult? It took paper centuries to become the preferred way of
capturing records--are we just being too impatient?

If you are studying Technology, this would be a valued area of
expertise. I wish you luck.

Cheers

Melissa.
