< and then the session at conference can be more of a Q&A with the researcher to talk about methodology, other tips/stuff they learned while doing the research that didn't have a good home in the paper itself, find out what questions (if any) were left unanswered that may be the seeds of the next research project ...>

Which is what the research paper presenters already do. We don't read the paper (because, of course, we want folks to go to the Foundation website to download the paper - usually because they are so large), but do summarize some of the findings, discuss the research approach, describe some of the more interesting findings, and so on. But it cannot be very interactive to do this. It just doesn't work. Frankly, when I attend a session on a new issue or area of concern, I want to hear what the expert (i.e. presenter) has to say - not spend the time "interacting" with the other participants who are just a new at the issue as I am. On the other hand - some of the best workshops I have presented in Trinidad were interactive in that when a participant asked a question - one or more other participants answered that question. It was a lively and fun session. But it was serendipitous, a presenter cannot always count on knowledgeable folks being participants.
