Peter, you are absolutely correct. What I too find troubling is that the 
e-book exists strictly on the right of first sale. One is purchasing the 
right to read, not the right to own - something the vendors are quick to 
blur. The inability to share is a major drawback as sharing is a vital 
part of a book's value. The restrictions on sharing and the myriad of 
formats (most if not all are prone to obsolescence) is a 21st Century 
version of the library in Eco's "The Name of the Rose" where books were 
arranged so they could not be accessed.
