I know that there will be many perspectives and opinions (all of which
I'll be interested in reading).  

The one I'd like to mention is to ensure the security of the information
that is being disposed of.  Regardless of the format (e.g., paper,
electronic, magnetic), it needs to be destroyed in such a manner that
its informational content cannot be reconstructed.  Educating employees
to know when it's OK to discard documents/media in trash receptacles,
and when it's NOT (for example, when it contains personally identifiable
information such as social security numbers or home addresses) needs to
be part of that program.
