My one word response is chaos.
From a business perspective you could end up losing information you are
required to keep for legal and regulatory reasons. And even if it is not
needed from legal or regulatory perspective, think of the potential loss
of the usefulness of the information that was gathered.

I have read the responses to my previous posing with interest. One of the
fascinating intersections between records management and privacy is what
happens when the creator rather then the receiver of the information is
able to control the retention period. So I rather than the list serv
becomes the one to decide how long this message is kept regardless of the
list serv's retention policy.
What if users were able to do the same thing for information entered into
a data base? Is this technologically feasible? I don't know but there is
sufficient interest to support research on developing marketable tools to
accomplish this objective. What happens to our retention policy if
control over retention is ceded or shared with users?
