Good morning everyone,

I've been on the listserve off and on for a number of years. For the
past bunch of years I've been working in the energy industry.

To add another twist to this issue:

I have seen a number of companies use another source for things like
MSDS sheets. The company no longer keeps them on the premises but
subscribes to a service that employees can log into 24/7.

In the industry I worked for MSDS sheets can have a very long retention
period. When I questioned the vendor about how long they would retain
not only our company information but the history of every MSDS sheet,
the answer was very vague.

We struck up a deal with them that every year they would send us a
report (formatted the way we requested) of all of the new products that
required an MSDS sheet. We then loaded the report into our content
management system. But even this simple solution took months of
negotiating.

This also applies to vendor manuals. Companies that install new big
machinery want you to go on their website to access the operating
manuals. All well and good until you consider:

Equipment can be in place for over 50 years
Companies go out of business all the time

Just another thought on a rainy day in TX.
