There is the CLIR Fellowship Program which is intended to get those with
history and related degrees into archival positions. It basically takes
people without library degrees and places them in archival programs or
special collections where they can merge their expertise with
archives/library administration. My sister-in-law, with an advanced degree
in Russian literature , was accepted into the Program and is now a Digital
Collections expert for Penn State. Most of her fellow CLIR fellows did
have advanced degrees in history. For better or worse, a CLIR Fellowship
will mostly just open doors at academic research libraries.
