The following message was posted on ICA's listserv this morning by Yumiko
Ohara of the National Archives of Japan:
Dear colleagues,
Thank you so much for your warm message to Japanese archival
community.
We are devastated by the horrendous disaster in Northern and
Eastern part of Japan and are still facing a tremendous danger
at nuclear power plants and aftershocks.
National Archives of Japan has no damage so far in facilities and staff,
but due to the planned electric power outage and security of audience,
NAJ is temporarily closed.
We try to collect information on the situation of municipal archives
and other archival institutions in disaster area. However, we’ve had
only fragmented information till now. Still, more than ten thousand
people remain missing. Lifesaving and securing the lifeline are first
priority and it will take more time to find out the damages in archives.
TV reported a whole village office building was swallowed by tsunami
in a moment. It is certain that huge amount of important records were
lost forever.
Thank you again. We are encouraged by the messages from the
colleagues around the world.
