In today's Wall Street Journal (subscription required)...

Mr. Lynch (Autonomy's CEO) said that the reason he allowed the company
he co-founded to be acquired by H-P was because of “an alignment of
values”. According to Mr. Lynch, the IT industry is about to undergo a
radical transformation, and he believes that H-P are well placed to
exploit it.
He asserts the IT industry will shift from dealing with “structured
data”—data that you know what it is before you start dealing with it,
such as addresses, credit card numbers, or Social Security numbers—to
handling “unstructured data” such as the contents of an email or video
or a picture. That data does not fit pre-determined categories. At the
moment the IT industry works with structured information that can be
easily stored in databases.
