At the same time, we went after every public record we could get pertaining
to union pension funds. Because these are private organizations, the amount
of information was limited.

But the funds are required to file the equivalent of tax returns with the
U.S. Department of Labor. We were able to get enough information on one guy
to show that union dues were going to a union pension -- and we already knew
he was receiving a $108,000 city pension. That gave us our first "hit," and
we then knew that we really had something worth pursuing.
