To those of you who offered advice on this topic: thank you! Your input was 
valuable in my discussions with the Legal Department on how to handle this 
issue.

We ultimately decided to determine a suitable buffer period for each folder 
that has a trigger event-based retention requirement. The buffer was added 
to the "real" retention period mandated by our schedule. We are now, indeed, 
going to be keeping a lot of email much longer than we otherwise would, but 
as was pointed out, that's part of the cost of doing business.
