Thank you all for your responses!  Much appreciated - as always.

John - that is the crux of our problem - the default setting is way overkill for us. Currently our audit function counts for over 45% of memory in the system. We will need to turn off some of the functions, for sure.

Larry - I think keeping less is what we will need to do - right now I cannot see any negative impact of keeping less.  Good point about taking note of what functions are turned off - in case of legal action.  I believe we can address this by simply memorializing the reasons why we are turning certain functions off.

We initially ran into this with our ECM.  The default was to capture all metadata within the system....which was really overkill.  As a result, the audit function accounted for over 35% of memory.  Opening the audit trail took considerable time. Once we clearly defined our metadata requirements, the audit function became more manageable.
