The Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration (VCARA) of San
Jose State University is sponsoring our third annual conference, Exploring
and Developing Career Opportunities in the Digital Age, in our virtual
meeting and learning spaces in Second Life.

If you attended the Association for Library and Information Science (ALISE)
conference in Dallas, Texas, in January of this year, you may have heard
David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, explain what NARA [as
well as other public and private organizations] is looking for in their
employees:

1)	Someone who could connect with real life experiences (which can be gained
through internships and volunteer work as well as work experience).
2)	Technical savvy—not just experience with technologies but excited about
putting them to work.
3)	Comfortable with collaboration—can you play well with others? Hands-on
experience through team projects that provide evidence that you can, indeed,
play well with others.
4)	Passion for working with people—NARA is a customer-driven organization.
Show you can relate to others by presenting at the VCARA 3rd Annual
Conference on April 26th.

Students: The 3rd Annual VCARA Conference is an excellent opportunity to
present and discuss your experiences in internships, volunteer work,
research papers, and development of professional projects for class. Plus,
it’s a good way to add a “presentation” to your resume.

Educators: If you have a program that prepares students for
technology-related careers in libraries, archives, special collections,
records management, or a related careers or experience in teaching using
emerging technologies, we want to hear from you. A poster session (or
presentation) on the value and practical application of emerging
technologies and/or programs of study to prepare students to use such
technologies provides you an opportunity to share your enthusiasm and work
with others. An example of one specific project (using twitter to drive the
public to the organization’s web page) would be perfect!

Employers: If you are interested in helping to prepare future employees,
prepare a presentation to show us what you are looking for in an employee.
Be as specific or general as you wish.

The submission must consist of an emailed letter stating your name(s),
institutional affiliation(s), and contact information. Include a title,
brief abstract of your work or general idea that you’d like to discuss, and
any other details that may be relevant.

We will provide instruction and support for presenting in the virtual
environment. Most presenters use Microsoft Power Point slides or create a
podcast, and we can assist in the process of uploading any materials you
submit into Second Life.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 9, 2012.

If you have questions, an idea you’d like to discuss, or a submission for a
poster presentation or keynote presentation, please contact:
