Yvonne, microfilm is still a viable long term security backup. I would not
consider 7 years as long term - most popular electronic formats should be
able to maintain information safely within this time frame (with some
caveats). Also, if you are keeping paper, the cost of microfilming/scanning
may exceed the cost of storage in most instances during this time frame,
particularly if the paper is relatively inactive and you have low cost
storage space available..

I generally do not consider microfilm as a viable security media until we
reach a minimum of 20 years, and even then it depends on an assessment of
the trustworthiness of the system. Right now we are using microfilm for
items with retentions of 75 years plus, when appropriate.
