Hi, Amy!
I teach database design in the summer session, so I know a little bit. The
product you are using is very important. Microsoft products, including Excel
and Access are not recommended over 1,000 lines of data. Each line gets
harder to manage when you go out past the single alphabet columns.
A relational dataset may not be your only solution. When you have
hierarchical information, as we do in records management, you may want to
switch to XML or another hierarchical database. Some of these can work in
conjunction with a relational database. You also want to ensure a usable
user interface.
That said, however, a poorly designed relational database is no better than
anything else because even the best SQL queries cannot extract information
out.
Best wishes,
Carol
