Research Services Archivist @ The Ohio State University Libraries

Position Overview:
The Research Services Archivist position in The Ohio State University Archives presents an exciting opportunity to completely transform a research room. This is an opportunity to walk in the door, experience the current system, then propose and implement changes.  The Ohio State University Archives was established in 1965 and serves as the official memory of the University.  Since its establishment, the Archives has collected roughly 2 million photos and more than 30,000 cubic feet of manuscripts and materials.  The University Archives is housed in the Libraries' Book Depository Building.
Key responsibilities of this position include oversight of research services, exposing digitized and born-digital material online, and initiating new ways to engage the campus with archival materials. This position will run a research room and will provide ownership of services offered. The individual in this role will have frequent interactions with some of the brightest minds of the university and will provide assistance on a wide range of requests.

Position Environment:
This position reports to the University Archivist and works with a talented group of individuals who each have a passion for preserving history. This position also works closely with the staff of the Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program and the Ohio Congressional Archives, programs within the same building. This individual will primarily interact with the University Archivist, Audiovisual Curator, Archives Assistant, Polar Curator, Ohio Congressional Archivist, e-Records/Digital Resources Archivist and five student assistants. Interested candidates can expect both teamwork and collaboration to be highly valued.

Performance Objectives:

  1.  Evaluate the current status of the assigned research room, then propose and implement changes to transform all research room services.
  2.  Coordinate research room activities, including assisting students, faculty, staff and other researchers by providing guidance and materials relevant to the information requested, answer requests,    and schedule and train student workers to provide basic research room services.
  3.  Collaborate with Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program and Ohio Congressional Archives to expose digitized and born-digital material online.
  4.  Significantly increase the amount of digital content available online.
  5.  Assist with departmental social media engagement, including blogs, Facebook and Twitter.
  6.  Initiate new ways to engage the campus with archival materials and facilitate conversations with faculty members regarding the use of Archives in courses.

Experience/Requirements:

  *   Completion of a Bachelor's Degree is required; a MLS or MA in History is preferred.
  *   Must be comfortable retrieving archival information within the Book Depository. This requires driving a forklift (training will be provided), comfort with heights (shelving is 30 feet tall) and the ability to lift 40 lbs. (the weight of an archival box) on a consistent basis.
  *   At least two years of experience in an archival setting (can be concurrent with education).
  *    Knowledge and experience in HTML, PhotoShop and web content management systems.
  *    Excellent customer service skills and the ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous demands.
