Truth is it's an unanswerable riddle- but because so many asked about it
after Lewis Carroll wrote the book, here' s what he said....

"It is nev*a*r put with the wrong end in front." Nevar of course is raven
spelled backward.

Others said they thought the answer included:

- Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being
musical notes. (Puzzle maven Sam Loyd, 1914)
- Because Poe wrote on both. (Loyd again)
- Because it slopes and has a flap. (Cyril Pearson, undated)

I've always loved the question because it forces people to think, but no
matter how long they think, they can nev*a*r come up with an answer!
