Hi Lindsay,

I know that you wanted to conduct a survey, have you already tried looking at the Online Archive of California (OAC) - http://oac.cdlib.org/? A lot of this work might already be done for you. Being of German heritage I am very interested in your survey.

Have you tried the German Consulate in San Fransisco and local German Community Groups like Stammtisch (the El Dorado Chapter is very active http://www.stammtischeldorado.com/)?

For everyone else and my plug for librarians and archivists in California, the OAC is an amazing site that links together many museums and libraries in one place and gives you photos, images or finding aids that you can look up yourself that can reduce your time spend onsite searching.

So are the State Archives http://www.sos.ca.gov/archives/ and their online catalogue MINERVA http://minerva.sos.ca.gov/ to conduct a search.

The Bancroft Library at Berkely is also a good source, but a lot should be included in the OAC http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/collections/oac.html.
