100% agree!  Almost everyone answers an email now and then for the very reason you state.  But these people were totally engrossed in their device for just about the entire two hours.  The one only stopped long enough to eat lunch.

I agree that the attendees described were rude.

However, I do want to provide another perspective on NOT shutting down mobile devices during meetings.  When I attend ARMA meetings during working hours, my employer is paying me to work.  While they understand the benefits of my attendance at an ARMA meeting, they do expect me to continue performing critical duties.  My employer pays for my mobile connectivity for this very reason.

That said, I do make certain to put my phone on silent mode, and would never ignore a speaker to surf the web/Facebook.
