As a speaker, I do agree that they will get out of sitting in a lecture
style meeting what they put into it. In a sense it is their problem. But in
truly collaborative contribution meetings paying participating entail more
that nodding agreement occasionally. And when a meeting attendees activities
are distracting to others (which OFTEN the case) they need to be invited to
continue those activities somewhere else.

From a speaker's or an audience member's perspective, I agree with Gary. As
long the behavior is not disruptive to the audience, I am fine with it.
There are times during a presentation where I will do some quick research
about a question the speaker brought to mind.
