The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program has just released its new strategic plan. It specifically cites NARA and the research supported by NARA's Applied Research Division. It is very encouraging to have the issues facing records managers and archivists acknowledged by the White House as a top priority.
"Nor do we yet have a rationalized, robust information infrastructure for the long-term preservation, curation, federation, sustainability, accessibility, and survivability of vital Federal electronic records and data collections, such as those overseen by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)." (p.18)
The report cites a number of research needs directly related to work carried out by our Applied Research Partners (pp 18-19).
You can find the whole report here: http://www.nitrd.gov/PUBS/strategic_plans/2012_NITRD_Strategic_Plan.pdf
The NITRD Program is a unique collaboration of more than a dozen Federal agencies that support R&D activities in the Federal government, and serves as the source of federally funded revolutionary breakthroughs in advanced information technologies such as computing, networking, and software.
NARA was invited to participate in the activities of the NITRD Program in 2003 and became a full member in 2007. Participation in the NITRD Program allows NARA to shape and leverage the research and development efforts of other NITRD Federal agencies while leveraging their resources and expertise..
