Chicago Midway (MDW) is closer in to the Loop. The primary airline serving MDW is Southwest, although there are a few other airlines. Cabs will generally be cheaper to the ARMA hotels than from O'Hare. Figure about $30 to the Loop from MDW and $40 to the Loop from ORD. All cabs are metered, so traffic delays can add up.Chicago has a pretty healthy reverse commute in addition to the normal commute into the city, so avoid rush hours (6am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm) if possible. Even Saturday and Sunday traffic into the city can be interesting.

Chicago airport information can be found here: http://www.flychicago.com/

The CTA Orange Line serves MDW. You'll want the Adams / Wabash stop for the Palmer House. Travel light.

If you fly to O'Hare (ORD) and want to use public transit, the Blue Line serves O'Hare. For the Palmer House, you want the Monroe stop. Again, travel light.

For anyone going to the Chicago Hilton, the closest CTA rapid transit stop is Harrison on the Red Line. You would have to transfer from the Blue Line or Orange Line in the Loop. See http://www.transitchicago.com/ for more information.

As in any big city, use caution on public transit. Be continually aware of your surroundings, don't display iPads or smartphones. If you have luggage, you're pretty much already going to be standing out.

If you are driving or planning to rent a car, be aware that parking in the Loop can be breathtakingly expensive. The Chicago Hilton gets $45 a day for self-park. There are a few parking lots around the Hilton that are cheaper, but many of them are not 24 hour lots. Surface parking lots are generally not staffed overnight.

Amtrak is another option. I'd recommend a cab from Union Station to either hotel, although the Palmer House is a very healthy walk. Cabs are generally plentiful around Union Station. Note that there is a pretty significant construction project on Wacker Drive just east of Union Station, so traffic is very congested there.

If you're really looking to travel inexpensively, Megabus stops near Union Station. The Union Station area is generally safe during the day, although Megabus provides next to no shelter. The Greyhound station is not far from Union Station, but is a fairly undesirable area.
