Doug hit the nail on the head here- the BIG problem is secondary sales and
no one looking to see if there was a recall that hadn't been looked into.

Toyota had a recall of 4-Runners that had a faulty head gasket- applied to
1992-1995 models, HUGE recall and lots of second owners were unaware of
it.  I had a 1993, took it in at 145K miles and they gave me a rental
car... 6 weeks later, they STILL hadn't gotten to it, when they finally
did, they had decided in all instances that took over a month to resolve
and they were losing big buck son rentals, they would change out THE ENTIRE
ENGINE... so at 145K, I got a brand new engine, which was to my benefit
because at 173K a drunk driver t-boned my truck and totaled it, and I got
credit for an engine with only 28K miles on it =)
