I've been scratching my head over this thread for some time. Entertaining, yes, but I'm not sure I understand the reason for the change. And in situations like this, I'm sure there are very good reasons why greater explanations can't be disclosed.

So, shooting in the dark, here is where I am confused: The US Patent and Trademark office shows 14 registered trademarks using the word GARP. Yes, one of them is an association - so what? There are also at 52 NRAs, 181 ARMAs and 1019 AAAs that have all received a trademark.

GARP used in the records management context is not the same thing as GARP used in a risk management context. Granted the risk management people are a greedy bunch and have filed trademark registry in 4 different international classes: 35 (Advertising and business); 36 (Insurance and Financial); 41 (Education and Entertainment); and 42 (Computer, Scientific and Legal). I can well understand not wanting to go to court to prove that there would be no confusion or overlap in those classes. But evidently the risk management people forgot about class 39 (Transportation and Storage) which is as fitting a category as any for records and archive management. Since a great deal of money and time has been invested in the use of GARP, it would seem to make some sense to me to file a trademark registry under that class. It may not be the best fit, or as far-reaching as some would like, but it would work and I don't believe it would require an abandonment of an established brand. (Legal types, feel free to educate me if I'm wrong on this).

Looking forward to seeing folks in Chicago on Sunday.

Jim

This is not going to get better any time soon. The Principles is a bluegrass gospel group. Google it.

I guess we now see why professionals debating issues on this Listserv have occasionally been accused of "preaching to the choir!"
