In addition, one must insure that the microfilm is stored appropriately. Microfilm still beats other media, with a life expectancy of 500 years, if stored properly.

Subject: Re: Retaining Hard Copy of Records

Peter said "But remember if the decision is to destroy the hard copy after filming or scanning you will need to be rigorous about compliance with the procedures and processes to insure the trustworthiness of the image."

For document scanning, see ANSI/AIIM MS44-1988 (R1993) "Recommended Practice for Quality Control of Image Scanners" and ANSI/AIIM TR34-1996 "Sampling Procedures for Inspection by Attributes of Images in Electronic Image Management (EIM) & Micrographics Systems".

For microfilming, ANSI/AIIM MS23-2004 "Standard Recommended Practice - Production, Inspection, and Quality Assurance of First-Generation, Silver Microforms of Documents" is still the "bible of micrographics".

Best regards,

Fred
